Whether you just got your boat back from having it serviced, or you are just pulling your boat out of storage, here are a few things we recommend checking! Nothing is worse than ruining a day on the water over something simple, so here are just a few of our recommendations before getting to the boat ramp or just dropping your boat in the water.
Check Your Drain Plugs
When we service boats we generally remove drain plugs to prevent any damage from rain water getting into the bilge of your boat. Be sure to verify all of your drain plugs before putting your boat in the water. Some common locations of drain plugs are at the rear of the boat towards the bottom and beneath an access hatch towards the middle of the boat. If you are unsure of where your drain plugs are be sure to ask!
Verify All Safety Equipment
The US Coast Guard and the Department of Natural Resources require specific safety gear on different types of boat. Before hitting the water, please verify that you have all of the required safety equipment for your type of boat. For more information on what is required check your local DNR website and the USCG Website.
Make Sure Your Batteries Are Charged
Between the bilge running, leaving the battery switch on, or many other reasons, it isn't uncommon to get to the water and find out your battery isn't charged. We recommend making sure your batteries are good to go before you get to the boat ramp.
Make Sure Your Boat Has Fuel
Nothing ruins a fun day on the water like having to call it quits due to not having enough gas. Before getting to the lake or dropping your boat in the water, it is worth verifying you have more than enough gas for a fun day on the lake!
